LOCAL LIFE
Little Professor Bookshop – Homewood, AL
What an absolute pleasure, a quaint little throwback to simpler times when we connected in community even if it’s just an effortless “Have a nice day” to the the locals coming in and out the open door. Some just grab a quick coffee and some plug in to the serene welcoming energy then stay a while.
This experience is reminiscent to times in my youth, before the explosion of big box stores and internet shopping which were supposed to make our lives easier, when my mother and I were greeted with recognition as we ran our errands. It’s hard to find these days but should be sought out in my opinion. I found it very centering, grounding. In our search to be productive and efficient, we’ve lost the attention to a basic need we all have built in to our souls … the need to belong … to community … to each other … in our common humanity. It’s actually very “easy” to achieve. Look up, notice where you are, who is around you and simply appreciate.
Little Professor accommodates this need beautifully.
Little Professor is in the heart of Homewood on 18th St. The atmosphere is pleasing, designed in such a way that you find yourself weaving in and out from section to section perusing the wide range of titles. The diversity of thought among the publications is impressive. Local authors, often hidden literary gems, are supported and championed here as evidenced by the monthly events ranging from book readings/signings to book clubs, many of which highlight the local talent. A membership is $79 a year which includes 20% off the entire store, 40% off Best Sellers which changes weekly, and best of all … Free Coffee! A nice perk if you ask me, but you don’t have to be a member to get on their mailing list so be sure to sign up and you’ll be in the know for all upcoming happenings.
