I can distinguish it now, his voice from all the others. As I step outside it’s a high-pitched, quick, sharp “cheep”. Birds don’t tweet, interestingly enough, they cheep, or chup, or chipchipchip, the ones around here anyway. It’s a distinct, noticeable sound in the absence of noise. And some sort of noise is just a click away, always my first inclination when waking up in an attempt to start the day off with information that will keep me in the know or music to raise my spirits for the tasks ahead, an outside source of sorts to turn up the volume and fill in the gaps of unrestricted thought. But you know, this little friendship with my cardinal friend, Clarke (I’ve named him), has its own perks. Not a flashy, glitzy event in any given day, but a small, delightful moment in time that winds up having great value. Those gaps, come to find out, have a distinct function. These small moments lead to recognizing and acknowledging other small moments and the list begins to grow. Before you know it, your day is packed full of smiles and pleasant reflections, things that tickle you or make you think, no … ponder.
So it seems, with silence loud enough to hear my own thoughts, my own observations, incentives become clear. For a few minutes, and sometimes more than that, quiet, stillness, offers just the right amount of stimulation.
Wonderment brought to you courtesy of the sound of silence.
