Passing The Baton

A fast, efficient start off the blocks: essential – A great finish: no letting up – But by far the trickiest and most crucial aspect of a relay race lies in a smooth pass of the baton. Not just for the obvious physical flow of the run, a seamless transition keeps the mental game on track without the distraction of correction, focusing solely on the goal before us. Heavily weighted attention is given to practicing a skill, building stamina, all necessary and important ingredients for improvement and ultimate success. The best athletes/teams, however, spend considerable time and effort with the mental game. It’s pretty much the same with any stage in life. It’s those transition times that get you. They’re tricky and difficult to navigate. You get to the point of understanding present circumstances, running at optimal capacity and then BAM, everything shifts, changes and throws off your equilibrium. As children, in these stage changes, we act out (the terrible twos, teenager angst) looking for stability, answers, really just trying to find our way in this new normal. Well, as adults we kind of do the same thing, unmoved and uninterested in unfolding new experiences, stubbornly insisting that we’ve already figured life out, done the work, ready for … what? At every stage welcoming the transition versus resisting it results in a much smoother baton pass.

On Your Mark … Get Set … GO! Over and over and over. Learning is synonymous with a life well-lived 🙂
